Former Indian cricketer Yusuf Pathan has begun on a new innings in Indian politics, emerging as the Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate from West Bengal's Berhampore seat for the upcoming Lok Sabha election. This unexpected move by TMC, nominating Pathan to contest against the formidable Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury of the Congress, has stirred considerable interest.

Yusuf Pathan's political debut is a significant gamble for the TMC, as he will be facing off against Chowdhury, a five-time Member of Parliament from the Indian National Congress (INC). Chowdhury has been undefeated in Berhampore constituency since 1999, making it an INC stronghold that has remained elusive so far.

Pathan's notable performances with the national team and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), have earned him recognition and a devoted fan base. Now, using his sporting fame, he aims to translate the support with a clear goal to serve public welfare as the primary motive behind entering the political field.

“Since I am here, all the cricket superstars whom I know…those people here are eager to see, will come. I will arrange for the general voters to see them and talk to them,” Pathan was quoted as saying by Anandabazar Patrika.

The announcement made by the former India cricketer regarding the participation of IPL 2024 stars in his election campaign has added a unique interest to the upcoming polls. Pathan said that his brother, fellow cricketer Irfan Pathan, would also join the campaign trail.

“Irfan is currently busy with the IPL. He will come if he gets a chance. Besides, the cricketers who are free during that time will also join the campaign,” he added.
