'The best technically correct and the best skilled players come to the fore in ODIs' - Beth Mooney after Australia's T20I series defeat in Women's Ashes 2023

Australia women began the 2023 Women's Ashes with a win in the one-off Test at Trent Bridge earlier in July. However, the tourists suffered a 1-2 defeat against the England women in the three-match T20I series. Both teams will next play three ODIs, with the first game to be contested at the Gloucestershire Cricket Stadium, in Bristol, on July 12. 

After losing the third T20I, Australia opener Beth Mooney believes that a switch to the 50-over format will help her side in the ongoing Women's Ashes series. Notably, they are one win away from retaining the prestigious trophy.

"One-day cricket is a format where the best players come to the fore and the best technically correct and the best skilled players come to the fore," Mooney told cricket.com.au.

The 29-year-old reckoned that her side is comprised of exceptionally talented players to feature in the 50-over format and took the trophy home. She added that her side have been brilliant in the ODI format over a longer period. Notably, Australia women have won 41 of their 42 ODI games since November 2017.

"So I still look at our changeroom and think we have a highly-skilled group of players to be able to play that format and win the three games coming up. We've been pretty consistent in that format across a long period of time so I’m sure there’ll be a lot of confidence taken out of that," the opening batter added.

While speaking about the T20I series defeat, Mooney remarked that they will assess the team and see what changes can be done in the upcoming matches. The 29-year-old added that the Alyssa Healy-led team will be confident heading into the ODI series in the coming days.

"I think we'll have to look inward into our dressing room and what we can do differently and a little bit better here and there. We'll put our heads together in the next couple of days and come up with some ideas," Mooney concluded.
