Lucknow Super Giants lost their opening wicket in the form of skipper KL Rahul after a decent start against Rajasthan Royals in the 26th match of the Indian Premier League 2023 (IPL) on Wednesday, April 19. Rahul and Kyle Mayers struggled for a quick start with the former producing another disappointing knock to attract fans' wrath on social media.
Rahul opened the innings but failed to open his account in the first over as Trent Boult bowled another impressive first-over maiden to give Rajasthan Royals a sensational start. Mayers showed little intent for the big shots while the Bangalore-born batter's orthodox approach irked the fans.
KL Rahul also survived two dropped catches from Rajasthan Royals' fielders as he struggled to find the gaps. The LSG skipper scored 39 off 32 deliveries with the help of four fours and one 103-meter six but the Lucknow Super Giants managed to score just 83 runs from 11 overs. In the first six innings in IPL 2023, Rahul has scored 194 runs, including a fifty against Punjab Kings in the previous game, but at a strike rate of 114.79.
Here is how Twitter reacted to KL Rahul's knock against Rajasthan Royals:
Meanwhile, Mayers also struggled for the big shots at Sawai Mansingh Stadium but recorded his third fifty of this season. He scored 51 but took 42 balls as Rajasthan Royals bowlers made an impressive comeback after Rahul’s dismissal in the 11th over.
Trent Boult, after conceding just two runs off his first two overs, returned to bowl his third over and bowled out Ayush Badoni in the 12th over. But it was Ravichandran Ashwin’s magic in the 14th over which added a big pressure on Lucknow’s innings. The veteran spinner dismissed Deepak Hooda and Mayers as he finished his spell with two wickets for 23.
Marcus Stoinis and Nicholas Pooran steadied the fall but the in-form duo struggled to finish the game. Sandeep Sharma gave away just seven runs in the 20th over as Lucknow Super Giants lost three wickets, two on runouts, to score just 154/7.
