Chasing 173 runs against Delhi Capitals on Tuesday, April 11, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Mumbai Indians got a really good start as both openers, Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan, made batting look really easy in the powerplay. However, soon after the end of that, Mumbai lost Kishan’s wicket, and things were looking a little tricky for the five-time champions. On a surface that was up and down and difficult for batters, Mumbai struggled to get going in the middle overs, but Tilak Varma showed his composure and looked flawless as he played some scintillating shots to set the tone of the match.
Former India stumper-batter Parthiv Patel was mighty impressed with his innings, even though the 20-year-old couldn’t finish the game and scored 41 runs off 29 deliveries. Patel lauded Tilak’s footwork, among many other things and called him a player for the future.
“He batted at number three, and the way he batted in a pitch which wasn’t easy for batters is commendable. His footwork was phenomenal, the way he can get into position quickly. Strike rotations weren’t easy with the way the off-spinners were bowling. We see his maturity innings after innings, so I think that was the biggest plus point.
When you come in at the start, you can get a good season. After that, everyone knows you’re playing style, what your strengths are, and your weaknesses. But to come back to the tournament and start like this is worthy of praise. It shows the confidence as well as the maturity of the player. Tilak Varma is a player for the future, and there’s no doubt in that,” the 38-year-old stated while talking to Jio Cinema.
Notably, in the match, Delhi Capitals made a strong comeback in the final phase of the game, and things were looking quite challenging for Mumbai at one point. However, Cameron Green and Tim David held their nerve and eventually managed to win the game on the final delivery of the match. With that, Mumbai moved to eighth in the IPL Points Table.
