'To execute that on the next ball shows he has practiced a lot' - Yuzvendra Chahal predicts bright future for Naman Dhir
Punjab Kings spinner Yuzvendra Chahal lauds Naman Dhir's resilience after being hit for sixes during the West Indies series.
Naman Dhir made an impressive start to his India T20I career during the white-ball matches against the West Indies, starting in late September. The off-spinner took three wickets in his debut T20I match on October 6, 2026, with figures of 3/31, demonstrating composure and skill against experienced opposition. Dhir's performance caught the attention of senior players for his ability to respond positively after being struck for boundaries.
Yuzvendra Chahal, the Punjab Kings spinner, offered detailed observations on Dhir's approach and mindset during the series. Chahal highlighted the young bowler's mental strength and preparation as key factors in his early success at the international level.
Chahal's assessment came after the third T20I on Sunday, October 11, where Dhir conceded three sixes in his third over but finished with the wicket of Kamil Pooran.
"Pace change, and he has the courage to bowl. He has dismissed the batter five times after getting hit for a six. It means he is trying to dismiss the batter on every ball," Chahal said during an interaction on Star Sports.
"It's not that easy. He was hit for three sixes today (Sunday). However, he didn't leave his strength, and it shows how big a bowler he can become going forward, especially in ODIs and T20Is," he added.
Executing plans under pressure shows extensive preparation
Chahal emphasised the difficulty of executing specific plans under pressure, particularly in T20 cricket where margins for error are minimal. The senior spinner noted that Dhir's ability to adjust and deliver the required ball immediately after being hit for a six demonstrated extensive preparation and self-belief.
"It's very easy to talk. Sitting in the AC, you can easily say that he should bowl a particular ball, but to execute that on the next ball shows he has practiced a lot. He has self-belief. When you play on such a small ground and in such a difficult situation, self-belief is extremely necessary. He has worked hard, and the captain and management need to be credited for showing full faith in him. Taking wickets like this shows that he has incredible courage," he added.
Dhir's role compared to Kedar Jadhav's
Chahal drew a comparison between Dhir's role and that of Kedar Jadhav, who played alongside him and Kuldeep Yadav in India's ODI and T20I squads. This comparison provided context for understanding Dhir's position in the team structure and his expected contributions across formats.
"The way he is bowling, he is performing his role. When I and Kuldeep Yadav used to play, Kedar Jadhav used to play with us. He is similar to him, bats at No. 5 or No. 6, and bowls five or six overs in ODIs, and bowls two to four overs in T20Is. This is not easy as an off-spinner," Chahal said.
Off-spinner's line changes and variation
Chahal also highlighted Dhir's distinctive bowling approach and the rarity of off-spinners performing at such a level in T20 cricket. The variation in line and the ability to create confusion among batters were identified as Dhir's key strengths that set him apart from other bowlers in the format.
"I have seen an off-spinner performing like this in T20s after a very long time. The wicket and ground don't matter to him. The way he changes his line and the confusion he creates is his strong point," Chahal said.
Dhir continued his strong showing in the third T20I on October 11, 2026, at Holkar Stadium in Indore, where he claimed two more wickets as India defeated West Indies by 14 runs to take a 2-1 series lead. His consistent performance across multiple matches demonstrated that his debut performance was not a one-off display but reflected genuine skill and preparation.
