Afghanistan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi was stunned after hearing of Dunith Wellalage’s father's unfortunate demise following Match 11 of Asia Cup 2025 between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. Coach Sanath Jayasuriya and the team manager infiormed about Suranga Wellalage’s untimely passing to Dunith on Thursday, September 18, after the game's conclusion.
As for Nabi, he only got to know about the news as he was heading back to the team bus after Afghanistan's six-wicket loss to the Lankans. A group of journalists rushed to Nabi to disclose the tragic news. Nabi, who had earlier smacked Wellalage for five sixes in an over, seemed apologetic and took some time to process the development.
Jayasuriya and Sri Lanka's team manager informed to the 22-year-old at the conclusion of the match. The two consoled the youngster before he packed up his equipment and took it along from the dugout just outside the boundary line to the pavilion. The cricket fraternity, like Nabi and Sri Lanka Cricket, stands in solidarity with Wellalage amidst this time of grief.
Dunith Wellalage’s father Suranga dies during Asia Cup 2025
Wellalage, who had bowled splendidly for his spell of 17 runs in three overs, got it all wrong in the final over of the Afghan innings against Nabi, who hit him for five sixes. Despite Nabi's late blitz, Afghanistan lost the match by six wickets to crash out of the tournament. Kusal Mendis (74* off 52) was awarded the Player of the Match accolade for his stellar knock.
