West Indian left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican produced a brilliant delivery in his very first over of Day 1 of the second Test match at the Arun Jaitely Stadium in New Delhi to dismiss star Indian batter KL Rahul, giving the visitors their first breakthrough.

Warrican tossed the delivery outside off, tempting Rahul to step down the track. The ball gripped the surface and turned sharply, beating Rahul comprehensively in the air and off the pitch. Wicketkeeper, Tevin Imlach, dislodged the bails in no time as Rahul, well short of his ground, looked stunned with the amount of turn. Notably, the delivery turned 8.4 degrees.

Before his dismissal, Rahul looked solid, scoring 38 off 54 balls with five boundaries and a six. He even smashed Khary Pierre over long-on earlier for his 27th Test six, going past Sunil Gavaskar’s tally. Meanwhile, coming off a century in the previous Test, Rahul, along with Yashasvi Jaiswal, provided India with a strong start.

Earlier in the morning, India captain Shubman Gill won his first toss as a Test captain and chose to bat first. The hosts went with an unchanged XI, while West Indies brought in Tevin Imlach and Anderson Phillip for Brandon King and Johann Layne, respectively.

Indian openers tackled the new ball carefully and played within themselves. Jaiswal, who had struggled against the cut shot in recent innings, survived a play-and-miss off Phillip in the 10th over but continued to rotate strike brilliantly. The duo brought up India’s 50 in the 16th over.

Meanwhile, the West Indies bowlers, Jayden Seales, Anderson Phillip, and Justin Greaves, bowled good opening spells, finding a little movement.  At the end of 20 overs, India's scorecard read 72 for 1, with Jaiswal unbeaten on 26 and debutant B Sai Sudharsan on 8.
