India’s pace attack came all guns blazing on the opening morning of the first Test against the West Indies at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, with Mohammed Siraj producing a stunning delivery to castle Brandon King. The hosts had their opponents struggling at 42 for 4 by the time drinks were called in the first session.

West Indies captain Roston Chase opted to bat first on a greenish pitch, backing his batting unit. Shubman Gill, leading India, wasn’t too displeased at losing the toss, admitting the surface had been under covers and was likely to assist seamers early on.

It didn’t take long for India’s fast-bowling duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Siraj to showcase their brilliance. However, after drawing the first blood in terms of Tagenarine Chanderpaul, he removed King with a peach. On the final ball of the 10th over, Siraj went full outside off, with A. King, expecting the ball to hold its line, went for a leave. However, the delivery came back in, crashing straight into the middle stump. Following which, the pacer pulled out his trademark Cristiano Ronaldo ‘Siuuu’. King departed for 13 off 15 balls, leaving West Indies in trouble at 39 for 3.

Siraj had already accounted for Chanderpaul, who nicked behind for a duck early in the innings, and later removed Alick Athanaze with another delivery outside off. His partner, Bumrah, got into the act by dismissing John Campbell, thanks to a sharp review that confirmed a thin edge.

At 42 for 4 in just 11.4 overs, West Indies’ decision to bat first was looking increasingly poor as the top order had no answers to India’s bowling, with Bumrah and Siraj keeping the stumps in play and forcing constant errors in judgment.
