Indian vice-captain Rishabh Pant displayed excellent maturity in the first innings against England at Headingley, Leeds. The wicketkeeper-batter is known for his aggressive style and on Day 2 acknowledged a well-directed bouncer from Brydon Carse while choosing to respect the delivery rather than attack it.

Pant admitted that while his partner Shubman Gill encouraged him to take on the short ball, he felt it was an incredible delivery that deserved respect.

Pant came to the crease after Yashasvi Jaiswal’s dismissal for a well-made 101 off 159 balls on Day 1. Pant began his innings with intent, smashing his second delivery, a full ball from Ben Stokes, straight down the ground for a boundary.

He reached his half-century before Stumps on Day 1 and carried on to score a brilliant 134 on Day 2, bringing up his seventh Test century in style with a six off Shoaib Bashir. With that, Pant overtook MS Dhoni for the most Test centuries by an Indian wicketkeeper.

India looked in command with centuries from Pant and Gill, who scored 147 in his first outing as captain of the Indian red-ball team. However, England bounced back in the morning session of Day 2, taking four quick wickets. India managed 95 runs in that session but lost both centurions, along with Shardul Thakur (1 off 8) and Karun Nair (0 off 4), who returned to the Test side after eight years.

For England, the captain led the attack with figures of 4 for 66, while the rest of the bowlers chipped in with a wicket each except for Woakes. At Lunch on Day 2, India stood at 454 for 7, with Ravindra Jadeja unbeaten on two runs at the crease.
