'We did not get the gold on a platter' - Sanju Samson after India's Asian Games win
India's wicketkeeper batter reflects on the team's 19-run victory over Pakistan in the Asian Games final.
India retained the Asian Games men's cricket gold with a 19-run victory over Pakistan in the final at Korogi Sports Park, Nisshin on October 3. The Indian team posted 211 for 6 after winning the toss and choosing to bat first, while Pakistan finished their innings at 192 for 6. The win secured back-to-back Asian Games men's cricket gold medals for India.
Sanju Samson, India's wicketkeeper batter, reflected on the team's performance after the match. Samson was dismissed for 2 off 4 balls during India's innings by Pakistan's Ahmed Daniyal. Speaking about the victory, Samson emphasised that the gold medal was the result of sustained effort and preparation.
"We had a very experienced team. That's where the experience of experienced players comes in. We knew how to manage our energy, how to keep ourselves motivated and focused even when practices were not happening and matches were not happening," Samson said as quoted by NDTV Sports.
The Indian team's composition played a crucial role in their success at the tournament. Bringing the regular T20 squad to the Asian Games proved beneficial for the team's performance. Samson acknowledged this strategic decision and its impact on the final.
"Bringing the ‘A' team really helped, and that's what happened against Pakistan in the final. I think it was a proper game for everyone," Samson said.
India's batting performance in the first innings set the foundation for their victory. Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma both scored half-centuries to guide India to 211 for 6. Samson reflected on how the team's first-innings total influenced their approach to the match.
"Finally, we got to play a good match. We scored 200 in the first innings and thought the second innings could be difficult for Pakistan, but the wicket was good and they also batted well. Everyone got to see a good final. We did not get the gold on a platter. We had to really work hard for it. That makes it all the more satisfying, and we are all happy," said Samson.
The final proved to be a competitive encounter between the two teams. Pakistan's batting unit responded well to India's total, but India's bowling and fielding efforts ultimately secured the 19-run margin. Samson's reflection underscored that the team's hard work and preparation throughout the tournament had culminated in a deserved victory.
