West Indies announce squad for ODI series vs Sri Lanka, Shimron Hetmyer returns after one year absence
Hetmyer has not featured in the West Indies' ODI setup since playing against England in Cardiff back in June 2025.
The West Indies have announced the 15-member squad for their One Day International (ODI) series against Sri Lanka, which starts on Wednesday, June 3. The three-match series will be entirely played at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica.
One of the most notable inclusions in the squad happens to be left-handed Shimron Hetmyer. The hard-hitting batter has not featured in the West Indies' ODI setup since playing against England in Cardiff back in June 2025. Thanks to his outstanding showing at the 2026 T20 World Cup, however, Hetmyer has regained his place in the ODI side with an eye on keeping him around for the upcoming World Cup in 2027. He went on to score 248 runs in the tournament at an average of 41.33, whilst striking at 186.46.
"Following his impressive performances during the recent ICC Men's T20 World Cup, Shimron Hetmyer has been reintegrated into the West Indies ODI setup as part of CWI's strategic build-up towards the 50-Over World Cup in October and November next year," Cricket West Indies said via ESPNcricinfo.
Meanwhile, fast bowler Alzarri Joseph also makes a comeback into the 50-over setup after recovering from a back injury which he sustained almost a year ago. The 29-year-old returned to professional cricket earlier this year and represented the Quetta Gladiators at the 2026 Pakistan Super League, where he took eight wickets from nine matches.
Alzarri will be partnered alongside Jayden Seales and Shamar Joseph in the bowling department. However, CWI will be managing their workload carefully ahead of a tight home season, which will also see the West Indies welcome New Zealand and Pakistan in the next few months.
West Indies legend elected President of Lancashire Cricket
West Indies need some positive results under their belt to guarantee themselves a place at the 2027 World Cup in Southern Africa. As things stand, they are ranked 10th in the ODI rankings, putting them outside of automatic qualification spots, with the top eight securing a berth in the 50-over tournament. The Caribbean outfit, however, have an excellent home record in ODI cricket, having not lost a series since 2023.
