Will O'Rourke will not feature in New Zealand's home series against India as he continues his recovery from injuries to his left hamstring and calf. The fast bowler sustained a hamstring tear during the final day of New Zealand's third Test against England in June, followed by a calf strain during a training session in late August. The decision to keep O'Rourke sidelined comes as a precautionary measure to allow sufficient time for rehabilitation before the demanding international schedule ahead.

New Zealand coach Rob Walter confirmed the absence and outlined the strategic reasoning behind the decision. The India tour will begin with five T20 Internationals starting October 22, followed by five one-day internationals and two Test matches scheduled for November 19 to December 1.

"It's obviously disappointing for Will to have to miss such a marquee tour at home against India. He was set to feature in both the ODI and Test series, but following subsequent discussions, we all agreed it was best for him to take some more time to rehabilitate both injuries and safely build up his bowling loads," Walter was quoted as saying by Cricinfo.

Managing pace bowling resources

O'Rourke's injury setbacks come after he had returned to international cricket earlier this year following seven months on the sidelines with a back stress fracture. Since making his Test debut in 2024, he has claimed 49 wickets in 14 matches at an average of just under 25. During New Zealand's 2-1 Test series victory in England in June, O'Rourke took 10 wickets before the hamstring injury ended his involvement in that tour.

Coach Walter explained the strategic approach to O'Rourke's recovery and the broader context of New Zealand's schedule. The pace bowling contingent faces significant demands across multiple formats and tours in the months ahead, requiring careful resource management.

"Our pace bowling resources will be critical over the next few months so we're taking a conservative approach to Will's return to ensure he's fully fit before he takes the field again," Walter added. This cautious management reflects the demands of the international calendar and the need to preserve key bowlers for the Australia tour in December.

Timeline for return to action

The timeline for O'Rourke's return has been mapped out with domestic cricket and international commitments in mind. Walter outlined the expected progression of his recovery and return to competitive cricket.

"Ideally he'll be able to return for Canterbury in the Plunket Shield in late December, and in a perfect world he'll be ready to go for the opening Test against Australia in Perth on December 9," Walter concluded.
