Australia Women (AUS-W) defeated New Zealand Women (NZ-W) by 89 runs in the second match of the Women’s World Cup 2025 at Holkar Cricket Stadium, Indore, on Wednesday, October 1. Australia skipper Alyssa Healy won the toss and elected to bat first.

The hosts started positively, adding 40 runs for the opening wicket before Healy was dismissed for 19. Phoebe Litchfield contributed 45, while Ellyse Perry added 33 runs. New Zealand fought back, taking two quick wickets to dismiss Beth Mooney and Annabel Sutherland.

However, Ashleigh Gardner held the innings together, finding gaps and keeping the scoring rate high even as wickets fell at the other end. Gardner played a brilliant knock of 115 off 83 balls, featuring 16 fours and a six, to guide Australia to a total of 326 for 10 in 49.3 overs. Jess Kerr and Lea Tahuhu claimed three wickets each for New Zealand.

In reply, New Zealand Women stumbled early, losing two wickets for no runs in the powerplay. Amelia Kerr and Sophie Devine attempted to steady the innings, with Kerr scoring 33. However, the middle order faltered, losing three batters in their 20s. Devine remained resolute at the other end, scoring a fighting 112 off 112 balls, including 12 fours and three sixes.

Despite Devine’s efforts, New Zealand were bowled out for 237 in 43.2 overs. Sophie Molineux and Annabel Sutherland were the pick of the bowlers for Australia, taking three wickets each.

Aussies get a flying start

Australia won the toss and chose to bat first, with Alyssa Healy and Phoebe Litchfield opening the innings. The duo put on 40 runs in the first five overs. Litchfield went on to score a quick 45 off 31 balls, including six fours and two sixes, and in the process, she also scored 1000 runs in ODIs.

Gardner shines with a ton against Kiwis

While wickets kept falling at the other end, Ashleigh Gardner held the innings together, scoring a brilliant 115 off 83 balls, including 16 fours and a six. This marked her second ODI century, and her stellar performance earned her the Player of the Match award.
