The eagerly awaited inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League is scheduled to get underway on March 4. Before the action takes place on the field, the five franchises will come together under one roof for the WPL 2023 auction on February 13 at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai.

A staggering tally of 1525 players registered for the marquee event. However, the list was trimmed down to 409 by the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India). Among the players to go under the hammer, 246 are Indians and 163 are overseas of which eight are from associate countries. However, with a squad limit of 18, only a maximum of 90 players will be able to fetch WPL contracts.

The WPL auction will kick-start with two marquee sets, which will consist of renowned names of world cricket who have made the international arena their happy hunting ground. Some of the top-drawer players in the category include Sophie Devine, Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, Ashleigh Gardner, and Ellyse Perry. These cricketers are one of the finest in the business and franchises are likely to break their banks to sign them.

The marquee event will not only witness top-drawer international stars but also uncapped players who have left the cricket fraternity in awe of their performances. These players are also likely to garner a lot of interest at the auction table. For instance, the likes of Shweta Sehrawat, Laura Harris, Grace Scrivens, and Shorna Akter might attract many bids.

INR 50 lakh is the maximum base price at the forthcoming auction and a total of 24 players have put themselves in the top bracket, of which 13 are foreign cricketers. Meanwhile, 30 players have kept their base prices at INR 40 lakh.
