South Africa created history by winning a Test series in India after 25 years, clinching the two-match contest 2-0 in Guwahati under the leadership of Temba Bavuma. India, who were once nearly unbeatable at home, have now suffered two home Test series defeats in two years - 0-3 to New Zealand in 2024 and 0-2 against South Africa now. Before these losses, India had dropped only two home series since the 0-2 defeat to South Africa in 2000.

The visitors dominated the second Test, winning by a massive margin of 408 runs. South Africa posted 489 in the first innings, highlighted by Senuran Muthusamy’s gritty 109 and Marco Jansen’s counterattacking 93. Jansen also produced a superb six-wicket haul. India, meanwhile, struggled, with only Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravindra Jadeja managing fifties, and the bowlers failing to make a significant impact. In the second innings, Simon Harmer wreaked havoc with a six-wicket haul, finishing with 17 wickets in the series to earn the Player of the Series award.

India’s campaign was marred by setbacks, including Shubman Gill’s absence after suffering neck spasm in the first Test in Kolkata. Rishabh Pant captained the side for the first time but could not prevent the series defeat. As a result, India have dropped to fifth in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025–27 points table, while South Africa have held their second position.

India will now return to red-ball cricket only after the T20 World Cup 2026 and IPL 2026, when they tour Sri Lanka for a two-match Test series. South Africa’s next Test assignment, meanwhile, will be a three-match series against Australia in September 2026. Elsewhere, the Ashes 2025-26 is underway, with Australia leading 1-0 and the second Test set for December 4 in Brisbane. New Zealand will also face West Indies in a three-match Test series beginning December 2 in Christchurch.
