Yuzvendra Chahal reveals his special connection with Manchester United
The Indian cricketer opens up about his childhood love for the club and his experience watching the Manchester Derby.
Yuzvendra Chahal has long maintained a deep connection with Manchester United that extends far beyond his professional cricket career. The Indian spinner recently travelled to Old Trafford to watch the Manchester Derby from the stands, experiencing firsthand the intensity and emotion that surround one of football's most storied rivalries. His passion for the club has remained constant throughout his life, shaping his sporting interests whenever his schedule permits.
He explained that following the Premier League and Manchester United matches has become an integral part of his life, offering moments of joy and camaraderie with friends.
"Manchester United has been a childhood love for me, so the Premier League is something I genuinely enjoy following whenever I get the time. One of my favourite things is getting my friends together, sitting with them and watching a big United game, there is always so much emotion and banter!" Chahal said to JioStar.
Why Chahal admires Manchester United
Despite the disappointment of the result, Chahal remains optimistic about Manchester United's prospects and the qualities within the current squad. He highlighted specific attributes that give him confidence in the team's ability to compete at the highest level. The cricketer's assessment reflects the belief among supporters that the team possesses the character and talent to mount a strong challenge in the coming weeks.
"What I really like about this United team is the fight and the unpredictability. Matheus Cunha is someone I really admire, the way he plays with such energy, takes on defenders and keeps pushing the players around him. I genuinely believe this team can still surprise people. As a United fan since childhood, I’ll always believe in the team and keep backing them. That’s what being a football fan is all about," Chahal said.
What the Manchester Derby taught him
Chahal's recent visit to Old Trafford coincided with the Manchester Derby, one of English football's most fiercely contested encounters. The match proved to be an emotionally charged experience for the Indian cricketer, who witnessed the drama unfold with all its intensity. Manchester City's numerical disadvantage at one stage gave United hope, but Erling Haaland's controversial goal, which went through a lengthy VAR review, ultimately decided the outcome in United's favour.
Chahal lauds Shreyas Iyer's maiden T20I century
"I watched the Manchester Derby recently. When City went down to ten men, I really felt United would find a way to get the result, and there were moments when it looked like we could take the game. To then see Haaland score and the goal go through that whole VAR drama was painful as a United fan! But that’s football, sometimes you get the result you want and sometimes you don’t," Chahal concluded.
Manchester United were looking to climb the league table following the international break, and Chahal's backing reflected the belief among supporters that the team possessed the character and talent to mount a strong challenge in the weeks ahead.
