Having claimed 183 wickets in 161 games, former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) player, currently the bowling coach of the team, Dwayne Bravo remains to be the leading wicket-taker in the history of the Indian Premier League. While achieving the feat is no joke, there are possibilities of a few select bowlers surpassing DJ Bravo and scripting a new record.
One such bowler who can go past Bravo is Rajasthan Royals’ ace spinner, Yuzvendra Chahal. Representing the Men in Pink for the first time in IPL 2022, Chahal made a great impact as he emerged as the highest wicket-taker of the tournament and won the Purple Cap for picking up 27 wickets in 17 matches that he played throughout, till the summit clash.
Before the 2022 edition of the tournament, Chahal had been a key member of the Royal Challengers Bangalore. The team released him ahead of the mega auction and failed to get him back for IPL 2022 as Rajasthan Royals bought his services for INR 6.50 crore, and former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen believes that RCB made a grave error by letting Chahal go.
“One of the greatest gifts in the history of the IPL is Chahal to Rajasthan Royals. Absolutely no idea how Bangalore let him go. Always took the wickets, he was the bloke who kept them in the game. Unbelievable that this bloke is now wearing pink. With the ball he was the most valuable asset for RCB,” Pietersen said while commentating during the RR vs LSG contest on Wednesday, April 19.
This year again, Chahal is currently among the leading wicket-takers and shares the top spot alongside Lucknow’s Mark Wood with 11 wickets to his name from six matches. The two teams squared off in the 26th match of IPL 2023 at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. Chahal went on to concede 41 runs in his four-over spell and went wicketless, but he has proved to be a wicket-taking bowler over the years.
He was a vital cog in Rajasthan’s run till the finale last year as the team scripted history, making it to just their second IPL final, the first since the inaugural edition which they won. Chahal, this time again, would be hoping to finish on top and clinching the Purple Cap again.
