ZIM vs SL 2025: Brendan Taylor slated for ODI comeback as Chevrons name squad

Experienced campaigner Brendan Taylor is primed to make his ODI comeback after four years for Zimbabwe against Sri Lanka in the upcoming two-match series at home. He recently completed his ban for violating the ICC's anti-corruption code. Taylor recently returned to international cricket earlier in the month, playing the second Test against New Zealand.

Zimbabwe's Convener of Selectors David Mutendera expressed excitement in having Taylor back into the 50-over setup. He seemed optimistic that the squad hosting a strong squad of the Lankan Lions on their upcoming tour would give a tough fight.  

"We are delighted to welcome Brendan back into the fold. His experience and quality are invaluable, especially in pressure situations, and his presence will no doubt lift the dressing room. This squad has been selected to give us the best chance against a strong Sri Lankan side. We have combined proven match-winners with players who are hungry to make their mark, and that mix of experience and energy will be crucial as we transition from red-ball cricket to the fast pace of ODIs," stated Mutendera, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

Clarity in roles will be key: Justin Sammons

Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe head coach Justin Sammons did not hesitate to give his frank opinion on the side's recent international slump in form and the heavy losses they have suffered. He emphasized on the topic of each player knowing what is expected of him in order to go neck-to-neck against a well-oiled Sri Lankan unit.

"Zimbabwe's recent results have been poor. Since June, they have been beaten heavily in two home Tests against South Africa, lost all their games in a T20I tri-series against South Africa and New Zealand, and suffered heavy defeats in two home Tests against New Zealand. We've just come off a tough red-ball series and now it's about adjusting to the tempo and intensity of one-day cricket. Clarity in roles will be key - each player must understand exactly what's required. Get that right, and I believe we can compete strongly against a very disciplined Sri Lankan outfit," he added.

The 16-member squad will be led by Craig Ervine. Both of Zimbabwe's matches, followed by the T20I leg will be played at the Harare Sports Club. The Chevrons, who have not played any 50-over match since February, will have four new additions in the form of Clive Madande, Tony Munyonga, Brad Evans and uncapped seamer Ernest Masuku.
