Pakistan and New Zealand will face off in the second One Day International at the National Bank Cricket Arena in Karachi on Wednesday, January 11. The hosts will be confident heading into this clash following a six-wicket victory in the series opener.
While the first game witnessed the debut of leg spinner Usama Mir who picked up the key wickets of skipper Kane Williamson and a well-set Tom Latham, it was pacer Naseem Shah who stole the show with a match-winning fifer.
Meanwhile, the senior pros ensured that the batting order is in safe hands as the likes of skipper Babar Azam (66), opener Fakhar Zaman (56) and wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan (77*) made match-winning contributions as the Men in Green successfully chased down the 256-run target to draw first blood in the three-match ODI series.
Now, a win in the second ODI will mean that the hosts will seal the series and continue their 50-overs dominance at home.
The Kiwis, on the other hand, must get their strategies in place ahead of the all-important match. They suffered a batting failure in the last game and even the bowlers could not make much of an impact in containing the run flow on a good batting wicket. With the series on the line, the visitors need to bounce back strongly and the onus will be on skipper Kane Williamson to marshal his troops well.
Seasoned pacers Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson who bowled expensive spells in the last game will need to showcase better performances this time around.
Pitch and Conditions
The surface at the National Bank Cricket Arena has been a very good one for batting and it was evident in the last game as well. A team needs its top order to fire and lay a strong platform. Chasing is very easy on the track as a result of which the captain winning the toss will be looking to bowl first. Even a total in excess of 300 can be difficult to defend at times.
Probable Playing XIs for PAK vs NZ 2nd ODI
Pakistan
Pakistan will not be looking to make any changes to their playing XI and would be most likely fielding the same winning combination. Opener Imam-ul-Haq who failed in the last game will be expected to make his bat do the talking this time around and work in tandem with Fakhar Zaman to lay a solid foundation for the hosts.
Fakhar Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq, Babar Azam (c), Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Haris Sohail, Agha Salman, Mohammad Nawaz, Usama Mir, Mohammad Wasim Jr, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf
New Zealand
New Zealand will not be hoping to make any changes to their playing XI for this must-win clash either. Moreover, they do not have too much depth in their squad, especially in the pace department in the absence of Trent Boult, Matt Henry and Adam Milne. Jimmy Neesham’s absence means that they are also short of a proper all-rounder.
Finn Allen, Devon Conway, Kane Williamson (c), Daryl Mitchell, Tom Latham (wk), Glenn Phillips, Michael Bracewell, Mitchell Santner, Henry Shipley, Tim Southee, Lockie Ferguson
