The two-time T20 World Champions West Indies will have to walk the difficult road and play the First Round in order to qualify for the Super 12 of the T20 World Cup 2022. With that goal in mind, the Nicholas Pooran-led side on Monday, October 17, will lock horns with Scotland - a team that had fought hard and qualified for the Super 12 in the 2021 edition of the tournament.
The team from the Caribbean is currently going through a rough patch as they lost all their last three T20I series against India, New Zealand and Australia respectively. On top of that, Shimron Hetmyer’s last-minute exclusion from the squad has also put the team in a spot of bother.
Despite having a lot of power hitters in the squad, the team has struggled to put up a good show in the last few months. Alzaari Joseph and Sheldon Cottrell will share the responsibility of keeping the opposition under pressure.
Now moving to Scotland, the team showed a lot of maturity and played good cricket against the Netherlands in the warm-up game. Skipper Richie Berrington led the batting unit with 41 off 29 deliveries while Michael Leask played a brilliant cameo of 37 off 21 balls to help Scotland reach 151 after 20 overs.
Brad Wheal bowled well with the new ball and Scotland managed to get the win. As a unit, the boys looked sharp and clinical in the field and most importantly full of confidence. It will be difficult for them to bring the West Indies down but the team can take a lot of inspiration from Namibia, who defeated Sri Lanka by 55 runs in the tournament opener.
Pitch Conditions
The pitch at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart often helps the pacers early on. As the nerves settle down, the batters tend to take control and shape the match. Expect a high-scoring encounter for this match.

The team will bank a lot on Brandon King, who was the leading run-scorer in the recently concluded Caribbean Premier League (CPL). The 27-year-old kept his rich vein of form intact as he smashed 64 off 45 deliveries in the warm-up game against UAE. Nicholas Pooran too played well in the last match along with Raymon Reifer as the latter picked up three wickets in the warm-up game.

Scotland:
Scotland are unlikely to think much and change their squad which already looks stable on paper. It’s just that their senior players need to take responsibility and lead the team against the T20 giants.
