IND vs WI 2025, 2nd Test Day 1 Review: Yashasvi Jaiswal looks to double it up as India dominate Day 1 in Delhi

India completely dominated the opening day of the second Test against West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, finishing at 318 for 2. Star opener Yashasvi Jaiswal once again looked at his absolute best, remaining unbeaten on 173, while young B Sai Sudharsan impressed with an 87 as the hosts were on top throughout all three sessions.

After finally winning his first toss in seven attempts, captain Shubman Gill opted to bat first. The decision paid off as openers KL Rahul and Jaiswal tackled the new ball against Jayden Seales and Anderson Phillip brilliantly. The pair stitched a 58-run stand before Jomel Warrican dismissed Rahul for 38 with a sharp turning delivery that beat him in the air and had him stumped.

From there, Jaiswal partnered with Sai Sudharsan. Jaiswal converted his start into big scores, bringing up his seventh Test century off just 145 balls. Meanwhile, Sudharsan brought up his second Test fifty. The two left-handers added 126 runs without loss in the second session. Sudharsan dropped once on 58, extended the partnership to 193 runs before falling lbw to Warrican for 87.

By then, India had crossed 250 with ease. While Jaiswal reached 150, his fifth Test score over that landmark before turning 24, placing him in elite company alongside Don Bradman and Graeme Smith. For the West Indies, Warrican’s two wickets came from the rare deliveries that spun sharply. At stumps, India stood tall at 318 for 2, with Jaiswal unbeaten on 173 and skipper Gill on 20. 

"It was a good contribution, good partnership between me and Jaiswal. Hopefully, we'll have longer partnerships and get a big score. Definitely, I wasn't thinking about getting runs, so I was a bit more free, expressed myself, took time rather than rushing things. I didn't try to make things happen. Grateful for whatever I've done, but there's always something in the mind to make a lot more, happy with the runs, but would want to make more. Exciting to watch him bat from the other end, he converts good balls into boundary balls, that's so good to see. He's giving me awareness on what shots to play (on batting with Jaiswal), I'm learning as to what shot to play, the awareness on converting good ones into boundary ones. It's getting lower (on the wicket) and might start to turn genuinely from tomorrow. The wicket has gone slower and softer, hopefully it'll start turning from the rough," Sudharsan said after the day's play.
