After a thrilling victory by two wickets over the Bangla Tigers, Sri Lanka have entered the Super 4 stage and will now face Afghanistan in Match 1 of the round on September 03, 2022, at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in Sharjah. Kusal Mendis’s half-century and skipper Dasun Shanaka’s 45 off just 33 helped the Island nation in chasing 184 and beating Bangladesh in a virtual knock-out encounter. The Super 4 round consists of the dominant Indian team, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, and one of Pakistan or Hong Kong.
Both the teams met each other in the opening fixture of the ongoing Asia Cup tournament in Dubai and it was the Afghans who humiliated the Lankan Lions by eight wickets. Fazalhaq Farooqi was the man who blew Sri Lanka’s top order away as he ended his spell with figures of 3/11 in 3.4 overs to also win the Player of the Match award. The spin duo of captain Mohammad Nabi and Mujeeb Ur Rahman also snared two scalps each to puncture the Lankan innings.
Afghanistan openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Hazratullah Zazai shared an 83-run opening stand to finish off the formality of the run-chase. Nevertheless, a revitalized Sri Lankan side will be pumped up after their win over Bangladesh and would be raring to go against the in-form and high-flying Nabi’s side. The Lankan Lions will also look to contain the threat of spin twins Rashid Khan and Mujeeb, who are bowling outstandingly well in the competition. Both teams will look for a victory in this short competition as the Super 4 stage consists of only three matches.
