Former English captain, Joe Root, became the first batter in the history of Test cricket to attain the 3,000-run mark against India. The 34-year-old reached the landmark off just 60 innings, and became the only batter to have breached the milestone against the Baggy Blues.

England and India clashed in the third Test of the ongoing five-match series at the Lord's in London. Root, who scored 28 and 53* in the first and second innings of the series opener at Headingley, had the opportunity to etch his name in the record books as he was only 45 runs short of completing the landmark number runs against India in the longest format. The right-hander reached there after during his 33rd Test against India.

Root is also the highest individual run-getter against India in Test cricket, apart from being the only currently with at least 3000 runs. The second batter on the list is legendary Australia batter Ricky Ponting, who retired with 2,555 runs against India in 29 Test matches. Former English skipper and Root's ex-captain Alastair Cook is third on the list and the second-highest for England. Cook has 2431 runs against India from his 30 appearances against them.

Speaking of his overall Test stats as compared to his numbers against India, it is safe to infer that India are one of his most favourite oppositions. The Yorkshire-born's average of 57.53 against India is significantly more than his already impressive career average of 50.92. Furthermore, as many as 143 of his 67 half-centuries and 10 of his 36 hundreds have come against India.

England's No. 4 batter is also on the cusp of being the highest run-getter in the Test cricket history, by going past the tally of legendary Sachin Tendulkar.
