Defending champions England (ENG), who are already knocked out from the tournament, lock horns with Pakistan (PAK) in the penultimate game of the league stage of the ongoing ODI World Cup. Match No. 44 is scheduled for a doubleheader on Saturday, November 11, 2023, at the iconic Eden Gardens Stadium in Kolkata. With just two victories in eight outings, Jos Buttler and his men have been dumped out while the Men in Green need a miraculous effort to qualify for the semi-final.
Speaking about the reigning champions, England never looked like they were going to defend the trophy which they lifted four years back at the home of cricket, Lord’s. Their star-studded batting line-up failed miserably while the bowling also looked quite average. Jonny Bairstow and the skipper Jos Buttler himself have looked terribly out of touch as the former has amassed only 156 runs while Buttler has racked up just 111 runs.
England’s only victories have come against teams like Bangladesh and the Netherlands in this competition. On the other hand, Babar Azam’s Pakistan have had a mixed campaign so far. They have won four and lost four out of the eight matches played. They need to defeat the defending champions by a margin of 287 runs to pip New Zealand’s net run rate and qualify for the semis. The task looks seemingly impossible for the Asian side as they would like to end the campaign on a high while England will also play for some pride.
