Ravindra Jadeja’s 5/47 in Nagpur assisted India to gain a massive advantage on Day 1 as Australia were bundled out for 177 runs in the first day of first Test between India and Australia.

Speaking about how the day panned out, Australia opted to bat in the spin-friendly Nagpur surface, Indian pacers sent the Australian openers packing inside three overs with the new ball. However, the duo of Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschagne added 82 runs for the third wicket as they technically passed the spin dominance in the first session.

Ravindra Jadeja, the chief architect, broke the partnership by setting up Marnus Labuschagne. Once the partnership was broken, Australia never recovered as Jadeja picked his 11th fifer in his comeback game for India. Jadeja was ably supported by Ravichandran Ashwin as the duo together took eight wickets between them bundling Australia cheaply for 177 inside 64 overs.

In response to the 177, Indian batters looked solid as they withstood the spin in the final session, Skipper Rohit Sharma notched up his 15th half-century as they reduced the deficit to 100. Todd Murphy got his maiden Test wicket as he picked up KL Rahul for just 20.
