Sanju Samson’s efforts of an unbeaten 86 off 63 weren’t enough as India lost the opening one-day international, a truncated 40-overs per side contest, by just nine runs against South Africa in Lucknow. The five Protea bowlers were all amongst the wickets as they survived a late onslaught from wicketkeeper batter Samson to deny the hosts a victory. The second and penultimate match of the series now takes place on Sunday, October 09, 2022, at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi.
Speaking more about the first encounter, Quinton de Kock made 48 off 54 but skipper Temba Bavuma’s struggle on this tour stretched as he managed to score only eight. Aiden Markram fell prey to Kuldeep Yadav for the third time in the format as he bagged a duck. The visitors found themselves at 110/4 in 22.2 overs with David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen then joining hands to stitch a 139-run unbeaten stand to take their side to a total of 249/4.
India openers Shubman Gill and captain Shikhar Dhawan amassed single-digit scores while debutant Ruturaj Gaikwad mustered 19 off 42. All-rounder Shardul Thakur made 33 with Samson keeping the hosts in the hunt for the run-chase. But in the end, it proved too much for the latter as they fell just short of their target. Dhawan and his team will look to bounce back from the defeat and level the series 1-1 before the final game on Tuesday in Delhi.
