Shreyas Iyer smacked his second ODI century while Ishan Kishan also registered his career-best score of 93 as both standout performers helped India in winning the second of the three-match series by seven wickets in Ranchi. Chasing 279 for victory, Iyer remained unbeaten on 113 off 111 which included 15 fours as the hosts reached the target in 45.5 overs to also level the series 1-1 going into the decider on Tuesday, October 11 in Delhi.

Speaking about how the match unfolded, regular skipper Temba Bavuma missed the match as stand-in captain Keshav Maharaj won the toss and opted to bat first. Pacer Mohammed Siraj got rid of the in-form wicketkeeper batter Quinton de Kock for just five while Janneman Malan fell prey to debutant Shahbaz Ahmed for 25. Playing his first game on the tour, Reeza Hendricks looked solid as he smashed an eye-catching 74 off 76 with nine fours and a maximum. Aiden Markram also chipped in and amassed 79 off 89 while Heinrich Klaasen made a quickfire 30 off 26 with the help of two fours and as many maximums. Miller’s knock of 35 took the Protea’s total to 278/7 in their allotted 50 overs. Siraj was the pick of the Indian bowlers for his spell of 3/38 in ten overs.

In reply, captain Shikhar Dhawan mustered 13 while his opening partner Shubman Gill scored 28. Kishan and Iyer’s show then began as both stitched a magnificent 161-run partnership to take India’s total to 209/3 in 34.3 overs. The former fell short by just seven runs from his maiden ton but Iyer reached the three-figure mark and guided his side to a series-leveling victory. For his match-winning unbeaten hundred, Shreyas Iyer won the Player of the Match award.
