Pacers Arshdeep Singh and Deepak Chahar’s opening spell bursts proved too much for the South Africans as they got reduced to 9/5 and eventually managed just 106/8 in their 20 overs and lost the opening fixture by an eight-wicket margin in Thiruvananthapuram.
Suryakumar Yadav continued his brilliant form as he and KL Rahul struck unbeaten fifties to seal the deal for the hosts. The second of the three-match T20I series will take place on Sunday, October 02 at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.
Speaking more about the first T20 international, nothing went right for the visitors right from the toss. Arshdeep and Chahar bowled solidly upfront to break the back of the South African batting line-up. Three batters registered golden ducks for the Proteas with skipper Temba Bavuma bagging a four-ball naught and Quinton de Kock just a solitary run.
Harshal Patel took two wickets for 26 runs while spinner R Ashwin didn’t snare any scalp but gave away just eight runs in his four-over spell.
Suryakumar stretched his magical T20I form to smash 50* off 33 balls which included five fours and three maximums. Rahul struggled a bit but notched up an unbeaten half-century himself to take his side home.
Bavuma and his team will look to put on a better batting performance and bounce back to level the series in the second match. The Men in Blue, in their second-last T20I match before the mega T20 World Cup next month, would hope to win yet another series after recently beating the Australians 2-1.
