Virat Kohli’s brilliance and an all-round performance left Dasun Shanaka & co stunned as India defeated Sri Lanka by a huge margin of 67 runs in the first ODI in Guwahati. The two teams will now meet in the second game at Edens Gardens in Kolkata on January 12 as the Lankans would aim to level the series.
Asked to bat first in the first game, India had the best of the starts as the openers went all guns blazing, smashing 143 runs in 20 overs. That momentum was carried by Kohli, who notched up his 45th ODI ton and was ably supported by the middle-order batters. As a result, India posted a huge total of 373/7 in 50 overs.
In response, Sri Lankan batters did not live up to the expectations as they lost three quick wickets inside 15 overs. Dhananjaya de Silva and Pathum Nissanka showed some intent, but Mohammed Shami broke the partnership by dismissing the former. Dasun Shanaka showed some grit in the chase as well as he scored a century, but it did not cause any damage other than reducing India's win margin.
