Axar Patel’s Brilliance and Shivam Mavi’s dream debut left Dasun Shanaka & co shell shocked as Team India defeated the Asian Champions by the barest of margins in the first T20I. A topsy-Turvy game ended in favour of India on the last ball courtesy of an intelligent bowling performance under pressure in the last over from Axar Patel and brave gamble from Hardik Pandya.
Put into bat first, India dominated the first two overs as if it was the dream year for them, scoring 26 runs in two overs. Then came in the dream spoiler in form of Maheesh Theekshana who trapped Shubman Gill for LBW, and from thereon it was Sri Lanka’s brilliance until over number 15. At the end of innings, Deepak Hooda and Axar Patel shifted gears by raining fours and sixes over the ground. The duo together put on 68 runs for sixth wicket to post a defendable total of 162/5 in 20 overs
In reply, Sri Lankan top order batters fell cheaply to the Indian fast bowling dominance. No one really kept going until the first half. Sri Lanka lower order all-rounders were left with so much to be done in the last 54 balls with nearly 95 runs to get. Dasun Shanaka and Wannindu Hasaranga together showed some intent by putting 40 runs between them and kept the chase possible at some point. Dasun Shanaka was caught by Yuzvendra Chahal courtesy of a super-fast delivery from Umran Malik(155KPH). Chamika Karunaratne at the end tried to take the game as his responsibility by showing some intent with lusty maximums in 19th and 20th over but eventually, Sri Lanka lost by two runs. Shivam Mavi was the pick of bowlers with four wicket haul on his debut.
