Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka displayed an all-round performance to defeat India by 16 runs in the second T20I at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune on Thursday. By the virtue of the victory, Sri Lanka leveled the series 1-1 with the hosts.
Put into bat, Sri Lanka started off to a flyer scoring 55 runs in the powerplay with Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka toying with the potent Indian bowling attack. Soon after the powerplay Mendis completed his 11th T20I fifty but was caught plumb by Yuzvendra Chahal in the 9th over.
Later, the plan of sending Bhanuka Rajapaksha at number three backfired for the Sri Lankans as he was dismissed inside three balls, courtesy of sublime pace from Umran Malik. Charith Asalanka, however, took over the reigns from Mendis as he smashed 37 runs of 19 balls with four sixes to his name. Wickets kept falling at the regular interval as Sri Lanka were reduced to 138/6 in 16 overs.
Incoming batter Dasun Shanaka, meanwhile, changed the tide of the match as he smashed the Indian bowlers all around the ground in the last four overs by notching up the fastest fifty by a Sri Lankan batter. Shanaka registered 56 from 22 balls with six sixes to his name, making sure Sri Lanka posted a huge total of 206/6 in 20 overs.
In response, the Indian top order batters fell cheaply to the Sri Lankan fast bowling, losing four wickets in the powerplay with 39 runs on the board. As a result, India were left reeling at 57/5 in 9 overs. But the duo of Suryakumar Yadav and Axar Patel showed some intent in the chase in the middle overs by scoring 91 runs in 40 balls.
Interestingly, Yadav and Patel reaced to their half-centuries at strike rate of over 200. However, it was Dilshan Madushanka, who ended the hopes for India by picking the wicket of the World No.1 batter. Patel, meanwhile, kept India in the leather hunt and was ably supported with a cameo from Shivam Mavi. With 21 runs in last six ball, it was again the brilliance of the captain Shanaka, who held on the nerve and defended the total
