A stunning century from Fakhar Zaman followed by a gritty fifty from Babar Azam helped Pakistan edge past New Zealand by a margin of 21 runs by DLS in a rain-curtailed game despite a humungous total of 401 posted by New Zealand in match number 35 of ICC ODI World Cup 2023.

Asked to bat first, New Zealand couldn’t have asked for a better start as both Conway and Rachin Ravindra added 68 runs for the first wicket inside 11 overs before Conway nicked to the keeper off Hasan Ali’s bowling. Both Williamson and Ravindra added a solid 180-run stand for the second wicket as the Pakistan bowlers had no answers against their dominance.

Ravindra got to his 3rd century in this World Cup while Williamson got dismissed for well-made 95 runs. Cameos from Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner and Mark Chapman down the order helped New Zealand post their highest total of 401/6 in the World Cup. Mohammad Wasim Junior was the pick of bowlers as he ended his spell at 3/60 in 10 overs.

Chasing 402, Pakistan lost Abdullah Shafique earlier for four runs as Tim Southee drew the first blood for New Zealand. Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam continued to keep the scoreboard ticking as the bowlers were taken to the cleaners as they added 194 runs for the second wicket before rain arrived. Fakhar Zaman scored the fastest century for Pakistan in ODI World Cup. Pakistan scored 200/1 in 25.3 overs, eventually winning by 21 runs through the DLS method.
