Stats: Manav Suthar becomes seventh Indian spinner to take five on Test debut

Left-arm spinner Manav Suthar made history, becoming the tenth Indian bowler and seventh Indian spinner to pick up a five-wicket haul on Test debut, in India's innings and 300-run win in the one-off Test against Afghanistan at the New PCA Stadium in Mullanpur. 

Suthar finished the first innings with figures of 6/33, the third-best figures for an Indian bowler on Test debut, behind Narendra Hirwani’s twin eight-wicket hauls against West Indies in 1988 at Chennai. 

He made history early in the match, becoming just the eighth Indian cricketer to take a wicket in his first over on Test debut. He had opener Abdul Malik caught at short fine leg, top-edging a sweep with Mohammed Siraj having to run in to complete the catch.

His feat was also the first time in 25 years that a player had taken a wicket in their first over on debut, since former fast-bowler Tinu Yohannan dismissed England’s Marcus Trescothick in his first over on debut in 2001.

He finished Day 2 with figures of 3 for 21 in 15.5 overs, picking up the wickets of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Afsar Zazai, along with that of Malik. He just needed 6.1 overs on Day 3 to reach his record figures, dismissing the well-set Rahmat Shah by bowling him around his legs for his fifth. He capped his day off with a controversial LBW dismissal of Mohammad Saleem, which was shown to have pitched outside leg after the batter refused to review.

Afghanistan were bowled out for 152, being made to follow on after India declared at 564 for 8 in their first innings. They were bowled out for a total of 112, with Suthar adding just the one wicket in the second innings, to finish with match figures of 7 for 62 from 32 overs.
