Punjab Kings skipper Shikhar Dhawan pulled off a staggering knock as he smashed an unbeaten 99 off 66 against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the 14th match of the ongoing Indian Premier League 2023 (IPL) on Sunday (April 9). Hyderabad bowlers put in impressive spells to reduce Punjab to 88/9 at one stage but Dhawan's brave knock helped the Kings post a fighting total of 143/9.
The 37-year-old remained unbeaten and hit a total of 12 fours and five sixes. Dhawan contributed 69.23% of runs in the Punjab Kings' total and surpassed Rishabh Pant for the record of second-most percentage runs contributed in IPL totals.
Delhi Capitals' skipper Pant contributed 68.44% of his team's total in his famous unbeaten 128 off 63 against Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2018. Pant's sensational knock had helped Delhi Capitals to score 187 runs while batting first, but Dhawan smashed an unbeaten 92 off 50 to chase the target with nine wickets and seven balls remaining in that game.
Meanwhile, Dhawan's latest knock is not the best in terms of highest percentage of team's runs in an IPL innings. He missed by a narrow margin to Brendon McCullum's remarkable century for Kolkata Knight Riders in the very first game of the Indian Premier League in 2008.
McCullum kicked off IPL in the very best possible way, smashing an unbeaten 158 off 73 against Royal Challengers Bangalore, as he contributed 71.17% of runs in Kolkata Knight Riders' total of 222/3 while the remaining players scored just 64 runs (including 17 runs by extra).
Coming back to Punjab Kings' game against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mayank Markande took four wickets on his debut for the Sunrisers. Marco Jansen and Umran Malik also picked two wickets each as Punjab Kings seemed in trouble to even cross the 100-run park. But Shikhar played a captain's knock to avoid recording the lowest total on IPL 2023.
