Sri Lanka kept their semi-final hopes alive as they defeated Afghanistan by six wickets in Match 32 of the T20 World Cup 2022 in Brisbane. With this loss, Mohammad Nabi’s side is knocked out of the tournament with just two points in four matches. Wanindu Hasaranga and Dhananjaya de Silva were the star performers for the Lankan Lions as the former took 3/13 while de Silva registered his career-best score of 66*. England also re-ignited their campaign as Jos Buttler led from the front to score 73 eventually scripting a 20-run victory for his side against New Zealand in Match 33.

Speaking about the Afghanistan-Sri Lanka clash, Nabi won the toss and opted to bat first. Opening batter and wicketkeeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz top-scored for his team with his innings of 28 while no other Afghan batter got going. Spinner Hasaranga bowled a brilliant spell with Lahiru Kumara also picking up 2/30 in his four-over spell as Afghanistan got restricted to just 144/8 in 20 overs. In reply, openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis made ten and 25 respectively with de Silva taking control of the run-chase.

He remained unbeaten on 66 off 42 with six fours and two sixes to guide his side to a clinical victory in 18.3 overs. For his three scalps and an economical spell, Hasaranga grabbed the Player of the Match award. Sri Lanka is now placed in the fourth spot with four points.

In another encounter between the semi-finalists of the 2021 edition, England and New Zealand clashed at the same venue. Buttler won the toss and elected to bat first. He led his side from the front with his knock of 73 off just 47 with seven fours and two maximums. His opener partner Alex Hales also struck a fifty as England reached a competitive total of 179/6 in 20 overs. Chasing 180, openers Finn Allen and Devon Conway amassed only 16 and three respectively.

Skipper Kane Williamson played a slow innings of a run-a-ball 40 while Glenn Phillips continued from where he left off last time. The latter smashed 62 off 36 with four fours and three maximums but once he got dismissed, an England victory looked inevitable.

Sam Curran was the pick of the bowlers for England for his spell of 2/26 in four overs. The Kiwis reached 159/6 and fell short by 20 runs. New Zealand, England, and Australia are all tied on five points with the Blackcaps topping the table courtesy of a solid net run rate.
