The eighth edition of the T20 World Cup is back just after one year of the previous competition as defending Champions Australia and New Zealand are all set to kick off the Super 12 2022 campaign on Saturday, October 22, in Sydney. Both sides met in the final of the last tournament and it was the Aussies who emerged victorious on that occasion by defeating the Kiwis by eight wickets margin in Dubai to lift their maiden T20 WC title.
Heading into the marquee event, hosts Australia suffered two bilateral series losses to India in India and to England on home soil. The Aussies were beaten by a margin of 2-1 against the Men in Blue while they lost 2-0 (3) to the English side at home recently. On the other hand, New Zealand who completed two successful and came second-best to Pakistan in the recently-concluded Tri-Series Final in New Zealand.
Kane Williamson and his side face an uphill task against a strong and tournament favorites Australian side in the opening encounter of the World Cup. And to make matters worse, the Kiwis don’t have a great track record down under in international matches. In T20Is, they have played three games in Australia and lost all three of them. New Zealand will look for revenge for the 2021 final loss and start their WC campaign on a winning note while the Kangaroos would hope to live up to their favorites tag by sealing a win against their Trans-Tasman rivals.
