The Euro 2020 match between Denmark and Finland on Saturday, June 12, temporarily, sent the football world in frenzy. Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch after which the match at the Telia Parken Stadium in Copenhagen had to be suspended for two hours.

In the 42nd minute of the match, the 29-year-old Eriksen went to receive the ball after a Denmark throw-in, but he collapsed face-first after the ball hit his knee.

Match referee Anthony Taylor, on an immediate basis, asked for medical assistance. Teammates Martin Braithwaite and Thomas Delaney rushed to assist Eriksen as well.

His teammates, thereafter, formed a ring around him as the medical staff tried to recover him. Later, it was reported that Eriksen was transferred to the hospital and he responded to the treatment.

“The UEFA EURO 2020 match in Copenhagen has been suspended due to a medical emergency. Following the medical emergency involving Denmark’s player Christian Eriksen, a crisis meeting has taken place with both teams and match officials and further information will be communicated at 19:45 CET. The player has been transferred to the hospital and has been stabilised,” the statement read.

Around one and half hours following the occurrence, UEFA stated that the game will restart after “the request made by both teams”. In the end, Denmark went on to lose the game 0-1 after Joel Pohjanpalo scored a goal in the 59th minute. Denmark had a chance to equalise, but Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg missed a penalty.

Christian Eriksen stabilised

Piero Volpi, the team physician of Inter Milan, stated that the Italian club was in constant touch with the Danish football federation.

“We’re in contact with the Danish federation, the team manager, the team physician. But we still don’t know anything yet. We heard what UEFA said, and we’re all happy that he’s been stabilised. But that’s all we know,” Volpi was quoted as saying.

“But we’ll talk about that when the time is right. Right now, the important thing is that he recovers,” the physician added.

In the meantime, the cricketing fraternity poured in its wishes for the midfielder. From India’s Shreyas Iyer, Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan to former England skipper Michael Vaughan, a number of current and former cricketers wished for the well-being of the Danish footballer.
