It has been often said that the athletes in India are supremely talented and if they get a proper exposure and coaching, they will make the country proud at the major events. The 18-year-old Hima Das has proved it again as she became the first Indian to win the gold medal in the track and field event at the IAAF World Under-20 Athletics Championships. However, the cricketing fraternity has applauded Hima for her efforts as she scripted her name in the history books.

She was the pre-tournament favourite to win the Gold Medal and the youngster lived up to the expectations by clocking 51.46 seconds in a 400m final race for women. She has now joined the Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra who had won the Gold in the previous edition of the event in 2016 which was a World Record effort.

Interestingly, Hima Das, who is from Dhing village in Nagaon district in Assam, had run her first competitive race 18 months ago and her progress to win the World event is absolutely commendable which her coach terms as ‘unbelievable’.

“Her race begins in the final 80 metres. Her progress just shows how much potential she has. It has been just two years since she first wore spikes,” her coach Nipon Das said according to NDTV Sports.

Cricketers celebrate Hima’s achievement

The whole country is delighted with Hima’s feat and even the Indian cricketing fraternity is not behind. The likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma among many have taken time out and praised the Golden Girl of the Indian sports. In their congratulatory message, they have wished her all the luck in the future and hoped that she continues to make the country proud.

“Your 51.46 sec dash and years of hard work has paid off, #HimaDas. Many congratulations on winning Gold at the World U20 athletics championship. This is just the beginning of a new era. Many more to come. Keep up the hard work! #GoldenGirl #DreamsComeTrue,” Sachin’s tweet read for Hima read.
