England’s adaptability to the limited-overs cricket was once again proved by the way they scored against New Zealand in the Champions Trophy at the Cardiff. Despite not having any big contributions and partnerships, England posted 310 after being put into bat first by Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson.
Jason Roy departed for just 13 runs, continuing his struggling form ever since the IPL. Roy has managed to score just 64 runs in his last 8 outings in the ODI format as his spot in the side will now be under the radar. Alex Hales and Joe Root kept going like they did against Bangladesh. The pair put on 81 runs in 13 overs for the 2nd wicket before Alex Hales was done by the pace of Adam Milne. Hales struck 2 sixes and 3 fours in his innings of 56. Captain Eoin Morgan didn’t last long as he was caught behind scoring just 13 runs.
Joe Root got some support from Ben Stokes as they shared a 54-run stand in 9 overs before Root played on to his stumps. He struck 4 fours and 2 sixes in his near run-a-ball knock of 64 runs. When Stokes was looking formidable for a big knock, an uppercut from him ended up in the hands of the third man after scoring 48 off 53. Moeen Ali’s stay was shut down via a brilliant catch by Trent Boult at short fine-leg as England were reeling at 230/6 in 41st over.
However, Jos Buttler, along with the likes of Adil Rashid and Liam Plunkett, struck a crucial fifty to take the total past 300. England lost their last 3 wickets in space of 4 balls as they were bowled out in 49.3 overs. Buttler finished unbeaten on 61 in just 48 balls hitting 2 fours and 2 sixes.
Rain did come down during the England innings but it didn’t last long enough to take the players away from the field. With clouds around the venue, there is quite a chance of rain interruptions. With New Zealand’s previous game ending in a washout, they will now be hoping for at least 20 overs of play and to be ahead of the par score if rain troubles the game once again.
