Former South African skipper Hansie Cronje was one of the iconic players in South Africa during his playing days. Barring the infamy that he faced in the last few months of his life, he indeed was a player who the young South Africans looked up to. Under his captaincy, the Proteas flourished big time in the world cricket. In the year 2004, he was voted as the 11th greatest South African of all time.

Under the leadership of Cronje, South Africa won 27 Tests and lost 11, completing series victories against every team except Australia. His life took an ugly turn when his name popped up in the match fixing scandal. Before the investigations could be completed, Hansie Cronje died in a plane crash in 2002. He died 16 years ago but his teammates and the current lot of South African cricketers have not forgotten him.

On his 16th death anniversary, on June 1, 2018, former South African speedster and a close friend of Cronje, Allan Donald posted a tweet for him. In his tweet, Donald recalled the times when he played backyard cricket with Cronje as a young kid. He remarked that he will never forget his good old friend.

Here is what Allan Donald had to say:

“16 years ago you left us my brother. Every time when this day comes along I think about you and the times we had together as kids playing backyard cricket and rugby test matches. Missing you always Hansie you will never be forgotten. RIP,” Allan Donald wrote in his tweet.

Dale Steyn recalls his hero

Meanwhile, South African pacer Dale Steyn also joined in Donald to pay homage to Hansie Cronje. He remarked that despite the infamy that Cronje got, one can not take away the fact that he inspired a generation of cricketers in South Africa.

“Im 2 years older than Hansie was when he passed, but I’ll forever remember him through the eyes of my 11 year old self. Regardless of his mistakes, he was my then hero, he helped pave my direction to where I am today. RIP. God bless his close friends/family,” Dale Steyn remarked in his tweet for Hansie Cronje.
