There is very little doubt about the fact that Dale Steyn is one of the best bowlers in the world cricket. But his career has been marred with injuries of late and has been out of the action for the last couple of years. He made a brief comeback for the Test series against India earlier this year but sustained a foot injury in the first match itself. He is fit again now and is plying his trade in the County Championship and is motivated to play as many as 100 Test matches for his country.

Steyn made his return to the competitive cricket in the One-Day game for Hampshire against Somerset. He also played a four-day game then to prove his fitness where he bowled more than 20 overs after which he was selected in the Test squad for Sri Lanka tour. Having said that, he’s not the part of the ODI team where the Proteas will play 5 matches in the 50-over format as well.

I’d love to play all formats

Dale Steyn, in a recent interview to Sky Sports, has expressed his wish to play all the formats for South Africa. Moreover, he is eager to represent his country in whites in 100 Test matches. But he also realises the fact that there will be a lot of emphasis on white-ball cricket as the pinnacle event is less than a year away now.

“I’d love to play all formats. Like I said, I love playing cricket. I think Test cricket is the pinnacle. I’d love to try and play 100 Test matches, I don’t know whether I’ll get there. I’m at 86, so that’s about 14 more, but being a World Cup year, there’s a lot of white-ball emphasis right now. So I think we’ve only got five Tests until around this time next year,” he said.

Steyn has played 86 Test matches so far and has picked a whopping 419 wickets and is confident that his body will cope up with the demands of international cricket for next three years. “So if I’m going to look to play the 100 Test matches, I’m going to be around for the next three years. That’s 38. I think I can do it. The body seems fine. I’ve always been fit. It’s a mental thing. How long do you actually want to do it for,” Steyn added.
