Former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori and Andre Borovec have been roped in as the assistant coaches of the Australian men’s cricket team. Cricket Australia confirmed the same in an official statement on Tuesday. Vettori and Borovec will join forces with head coach Andrew McDonald in the support staff to take Australian cricket forward. The upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka, which starts at the end of June, will mark the start of the duo’s full-time duties.

Notably, Borovec, who has served the national team over the last year, will also mentor the Australia A team on the trip. Meanwhile, Vettori, who worked with the team as the spin consultant during the white-ball leg of the Pakistan tour earlier this year, will remain associated with Birmingham Phoenix as a coach in the Hundred.

Daniel Vettori has worked with Andrew McDonald before

“I was really impressed with what I saw of the group in Pakistan in the way they approached preparation, planning and playing. It’s a very strong and unified group which has the potential to have a very rewarding and hopefully successful period ahead,” stated Vettori in an official statement. One of the finest left-arm spinners to have ever graced the game, the former New Zealand international had a celebrated playing career and his numbers speak volumes of his brilliance.

Moreover, he has the experience working with McDonald before. The duo played and coached together at Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League, where McDonald operated as an assistant under Vettori. “I have worked with Daniel previously and could not speak more highly of his approach, work ethic and rapport he brings,” stated McDonald.

As far as Borovec is concerned, he has worked with the national team on select tours for the past year. McDonald is pretty pleased with his work and is keen to work with Borovec. “Andre has been fantastic for the group when he has been involved as an extremely skilled and experienced high-performance coach,” said McDonald.
