Over the years, T20I cricket, at least in terms of the craze, has eclipsed its longer versions – one-day internationals and Test cricket. This is due to the sole reason that the twenty over format produces more nail-biting and game-changing moments than its longer counterparts. The T20I craze has grown so much in the last decade that the world now boasts of five to six T20 domestic leagues which are participated by international stars. Among these is the Pakistan Super League, the third season of which is currently underway in the United Arab Emirates.

PSL doesn’t attract much crowd in the UAE stadiums for reasons understandable. But for those who turned up for the match between Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Thursday (March 1), the Windies power player Darren Sammy put up a surprise. Zalmi’s were given a target of 143 runs, for which Tamim Iqbal and Mohammed Hafiz put up a 54-run stand. Zalmi needed 35 in the last five overs and the end equation is 16 required off seven deliveries. To score 16 runs off 7 balls sounds difficult, but is often accomplished in T20 cricket.

Sealed the deal with four big hits

The unorthodox hitter that he is, Sammy fired on all cylinders in the last over, despite an injury on his front leg. He had walked off the field a few hours earlier after injuries his knees but returned to win his side a game nobody expected them to win. He couldn’t run between the wickets or even hop, but three sixes and a four, without moving himself from the crease, was all it look for Sammy to take his side home. He threw his bat in ecstasy and had his teammates coming and hugging him. Earlier in the day, Zalmi won the toss and elected to bowl.
