Australian opener David Warner is surely not having a good time in the ongoing tour against the Indians. Also, the left-handed batsman has not looked particularly comfortable against spin. Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has got the better of Warner 9 times in 23 Test innings they have played against each other and the story continues to be the same in the current series as well.
Ashwin has picked up Warner three times out of four innings in the series which clearly shows that the later is struggling to tackle the spinner. Amidst the big battle of the two cricketing nations, the world is witnessing a mini-duel between Ashwin and Warner which promises to get interesting in the two upcoming Test matches. However, Warner has clearly pointed out that he will continue to play his shots against the off-spinner despite the risks involved.
Former Australian captain Michael Clarke has advised David Warner to take suggestions from Indian legend Sourav Ganguly who was one of the greatest players of spin in his era.
“He should pick up the phone and speak to Sourav because no one played spin as a left-handed batsman as good as him. He can learn so much that the way he played spin. David Warner has all the shots but I am not sure if he has the confidence to play all those shots. At the moment he’s little bit uncertain and that’s because Ashwin has got him so many times,” Clarke told India Today.
Ganguly also believes that Warner needs to work hard to get himself going on Indian pitches which favours the spinners. “He’s got to fight hard on these pitches. It’s not like batting in Melbourne or Brisbane or Adelaide where the ball doesn’t spin. Ashwin bowling on those two pitches was lethal. Players with the caliber of Virat Kohli have not got runs because Nathan Lyon has bowled well to him, Australian spinners have bowled well to him”
