Former Australian batsman Dean Jones has had a happy coaching stint in relation to Pakistan as he guided Islamabad United to two titles in the Pakistan Super League in three years. The man has also spoken in favour of the Men in Green on quite a few occasions in the past and once also said that he wasn’t convinced India is the No.1 side in Tests because they haven’t played Pakistan.

But despite his goodwill gesture, 57-year-old Jones was in for a shock when a Pakistani fan hit out at him on Thursday but he did not take it lying down. Jones was initially asked by a Pakistani fan whether he would take up the job of Pakistan’s coach to which he replied “No” and said the current coach Mickey Arthur would sort it out. He also advised Pakistan’s senior cricketers to rise to the occasion and not to rely on a few players.

Fan asked Jones to shut mouth

It was then when another fan Irshad Khan jumped into the fray and accused Jones, a commentator now, of being biased. He also asked the ex-cricketer to “shut mouth” in the commentary box and even threatened that he would never see him in Pakistan games if he continued with his “biased” takes.

Jones was in no mood to ignore the abuse and called the fan a “dingbat” and asked him to turn “mute”.

Pakistani fans and former cricketers have heavily criticised their national team after their lacklustre exit from the Asia Cup. Sarfraz Ahmed’s side started as one of the tournament favourites but apart from a comprehensive win over qualifiers Hong Kong, it could not produce another dominant performance. Pakistan were walloped twice by arch-rivals India in the tournament and also lost to Bangladesh in their final game on Thursday to bow out of the race for the final.

Their only other win came against Afghanistan in the Super Four but that too was a hard-earned one. May be that one particular fan was extremely upset with his team’s performance and hit out at Jones. But other Pakistanis came to the Australian’s support and asked him to ignore the exceptions.

Here is what other fans told Jones on Twitter:
