Call it being jinxed or call it no luck, but India clearly are losing the plot when it comes to crunch situations in the finale of ICC events. There is a pattern too, the team starts well, only to squander at the end either due to brilliant bowling by the opposition or due to their excellent batting. India lost yet another ICC trophy, this time against New Zealand in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final in Southampton.

This time the Blackcaps came on top by beating India comprehensively by eight wickets and won their first ICC trophy since the Champions Trophy victory in 2000. Meanwhile, the wait continues for the Virat Kohli-led India as they last won an ICC event in 2013 under MS Dhoni’s leadership. During the same period, they lost two 50 over World Cups in 2015 and 2019, two T20 WOrld Cups in 2014 and  2016, and a Champions Trophy event in 2017.

Naturally, the fans are disappointed and angry with this result. They expressed their displeasure on social media and started calling the Indian cricket team as the new ‘chokers’.

Virat Kohli yet to win an ICC Trophy as a leader

Interestingly, Kohli’s last victory in an ICC event as the captain of the Indian team came way back in 2008, when he won an Under-19 trophy by beating South Africa in the final which was held in Malaysia. Apart from that victory, there has always been heartbreaks in store for the 32-year-old since the time he took over from Dhoni in all the formats in 2017. With this painful loss, there are also fans and critics who are questioning him on his captaincy abilities when it comes to delivering in crunch situations.

With Kohli being the all-format captain, there are speculations that he might give up captaincy in one format. With Test cricket being his top-most priority and ODI format being his stronger suit, when compared to T20Is, Kohli in near future might relinquish his post from the shortest format. The 32-year-old though has a chance to rectify his ICC events record as skipper this year.

India are set to play the ICC T20 World Cup 2021, in October and for now, they are the hosts to the global event. Can Kohli and India finally end the ICC trophy drought? Or will the wait continue? The answer will soon be out within four months.
