The Indian Premier League (IPL) fever has always been contagious and is more so now as the auction for 2019 season gets underway at Jaipur on December 18. A pool of more than 340 cricketers will go under the hammer on Tuesday with all the eight franchises ready to go for the jugular and grab the best of the lot for their respective sides.

Delhi Capitals, one of the 8 IPL franchises, is in the rejuvenation mode after changing its name (from Delhi Daredevils) and picking India’s top-order monster Shikhar Dhawan after getting released by Sunrisers Hyderabad. With world-class bowlers like South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada and New Zealand’s Trent Boult already in the ranks, Delhi looks keener to increase their bowling strength as they reached out to Twitterati for an opinion on whom they should aim for at the auction.

The ‘New Delhi’ in the look-out for bowlers

The official Twitter handle of Delhi Capitals posted a tweet on Wednesday wherein they mentioned the names of six bowlers and asked the followers to pick the most pertinent of them all. The list had two Indians – left-arm spinner Axar Patel and left-arm seamer Jaydev Unadkat, two South Africans – the legendary fast bowling duo of Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel alongside Australia’s James Faulkner and New Zealand’s Lockie Ferguson.

Dale Steyn, undoubtedly one of the greatest fast bowlers in the history of international cricket, hasn’t lived up to his reputation in his IPL campaign so far. Even his international career was hindered by a string of injuries in the recent past but the 35-year old is looking as fit as a fiddle which may have sought the attention of Delhi’s top brass. His compatriot Morne Morkel has had good stints in the mega T20 league but the tall fast bowler has retired from international cricket earlier this year and it will be interesting to see how he goes about the 2019 IPL season.

24-year old Axar Patel was a hugely promising prospect when he took the big stage but has failed to deliver high performance ever since. Delhi might still root for his all-round ability. The case is almost the same with respect to Jaydev Unadkat who represented Rajasthan Royals in the 2018 season. The left-armer, being under immense pressure being the most expensive Indian player of last year’s auction, couldn’t meet the expectations with the ball. Both James Faulkner and Lockie Ferguson were unsold in the previous auction and one wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t strike gold this time around too.

The Twitterati so far has been divided in opinion and has not unanimously opted for one of the six bowlers suggested in Delhi’s tweet. With not much time left for the auctions to begin, it will be interesting to see which bowler will the team root for.
