The Deodhar Trophy has undergone transitions with respect to the format in the last couple of years which used to be a tournament involving Zonal teams. Deodhar Trophy began in 1973/74 season and was played between Zonal team until 2014/15. Starting from the 2015/16 season, this tournament was adjusted as a competition between India A, India B and Vijay Hazare Trophy winner. From the ongoing season, India C will replace Vijay Hazare Trophy winner in this Triangular tournament.

The tournament opener will be played between Dinesh Karthik led India A and Shreyas Iyer led India B. The game will feature many players who could be in the mix of the next year’s World Cup. The likes of Karthik and Iyer could audition themselves of the middle-order slots while Krunal Pandya is eyeing the spin all-rounder’s position. He has a tough competition from his team-mate Ravichandran Ashwin who has been out of limited-overs formats for more than a year now.

Match Details:

The game between India A and India B will be played on 23rd October 2018 at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi.

The match starts at 9:00 AM IST (Local time).

Pitch Condition/Report:

Feroz Shah Kotla is well known for high-scoring matches but the Vijay Hazare Trophy witnessed a mixed kind of outcome. The 300-run mark was breached on three occasions in 11 completed matches this season and was only achieved by Delhi.

Squads:

India A: Dinesh Karthik (C), Prithvi Shaw, Anmolpreet Singh, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Ankeet Bawne, Nitish Rana, Karun Nair, Krunal Pandya, Ravichandran Ashwin, Shreyas Gopal, Shams Mulani, Mohammed Siraj, Dhawal Kulkarni, Siddarth Kaul.

Probable XI:

India A: Dinesh Karthik (C), Prithvi Shaw, Anmolpreet Singh, Ankeet Bawne, Nitish Rana, Karun Nair, Krunal Pandya, Ravichandran Ashwin, Mohammed Siraj, Dhawal Kulkarni, Siddarth Kaul.

India B: Shreyas Iyer (C), Mayank Agarwal, Prashant Chopra, Hanuma Vihari, Manoj Tiwary, Ankush Bains, Krishnappa Gowtham, Shahbaz Nadeem, Deepak Chahar, Varun Aaron, Jaydev Unadkat.

Power Picks:

Anmolpreet Singh, Ravichandran Ashwin and Dhawal Kulkarni could be crucial picks who have the ability to change the course of the game. Kulkarni is handy with the new ball and can run through the opposition while Ashwin could add value with the bat in crucial junctures for his team. Young Anmolpreet is known for playing marathon knocks in his short career.

Best Playing XI:

Dinesh Karthik, Prithvi Shaw, Shreyas Iyer, Ankeet Bawne, Hanuma Vihari, Prashant Chopra, Krunal Pandya, Ravichandran Ashwin, Mohammed Siraj, Shahbaz Nadeem, Jaydev Unadkat.

Captain and Vice-Captain Selection:

Going by the performances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, the likes of Krunal Pandya, Shreyas Iyer, Prithvi Shaw and Hanuma Vihari will be the main picks. They are also the best options for the captain or vice-captain position. Along with these four, either of Mohammed Siraj and Ravichandran Ashwin will be a handy option as vice-captain. This tournament will be crucial for the duo to crack into the Indian limited-overs squads.

Expert Advice:

It is better to pick the players who are on the radar of selectors for the first match and have played for India A and India B teams in the past. Prithvi Shaw, who scored fifties in four of the five games he played in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, struggled with a shoulder injury in the semi-final game against Hyderabad. He lasted only three deliveries in the final which won’t give a clarity with regards to his recovery but he deserves a spot in the team.

Probable Winners:

India A and India B can’t be separated based on their squads but India A could edge past based on the all-round line-up. The chasing team will have an upper hand at this venue.
