Despite the fifer, it’s yet another no-ball dismissal that made Jasprit Bumrah the talking point

Cricket is a cruel game for it could see one trolled even after putting up a good show. Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who made an impressive comeback to the Test team on Tuesday, August 21, got a taste of it. Even as he took five wickets in England’s second innings in the third Test at Trent Bridge to peg the hosts back, his dismissal of Adil Rashid off a no ball remained a highly discussed topic of the day.

England were staring at defeat, losing 9 wickets for 311 runs at stumps on Day 4, requiring another 210 runs with 90 overs remaining on the final day. While Bumrah took 5 for 85, Ishant Sharma took 2 for 70 and Mohammad Shami and Hardik Pandya bagged one wicket each. The hosts were reeling at 62 for 4 when Jos Buttler scored a century to keep them in the fight but his dismissal meant England’s defeat was inevitable.

The match would have been over on Day 4 itself had Bumrah not bowled the no-ball which saw Rashid nicking one to captain Virat Kohli in the slips. Rashid remained not out on 30 at the end of the day’s play with tail-ender James Anderson accompanying him on 8. Rashid got his life in the fourth ball he played during his innings and remained unbeaten for 55 balls when the day’s play ended.

Bumrah’s tryst with ‘no ball wickets’

Bumrah was criticised by the Indian supporters for repeatedly taking wickets off no balls in international cricket. He earned his ill-reputation against Pakistan in the final of the Champions Trophy in England last year when he let Fakhar Zaman off the hook at 3 and the latter went on to slam a ton and India lost the game.

Thereafter, Bumrah produced wickets in no balls on many other occasions, including against England and Sri Lanka, leaving the supporters and also former cricketer like Sunil Gavaskar annoyed. On Tuesday, too, his over-stepping while taking Rashid’s wicket left the Twitterati with a sour mood. Excepting the no ball, however, Bumrah made an impressive return to the Test team and picked up a crucial fifer – his second in fourth Test.
