Don’t be Surprised if you see an Attacking Dhoni says Former Coach: As we head into the middle of June, the Indian cricketers will don their colored jerseys once again after an action packed cricketing season in the last few months. Now, the spotlight shifts from the test skipper in command Virat Kohli to the Indian limited overs captain- MS Dhoni. As the next 50 over world cup will be played in 2019, which means that by then Dhoni would be turning 38. There have been many voices whispering in favor of the promotion of Kohli as the full time limited overs captain to boost India’s hopes of winning back the cup they lost in 2015.
Dhoni’s stats and degrading skills with the age are also not pressing his case. Now, he no longer seems to be the old Dhoni who could land bowlers in absolute mercy with his top notch aggressive slog over hits. In 2015, he averages 43 which is his lowest average in last 10 years with no centuries in the last two years.
It seems as if even Dhoni has realized this fact and he has been sweating hard in the nets at the national stadium in Delhi. The India- Bangladesh series would commence from 18th of this month and Dhoni wants to be at his belligerent best once again.
In a recent interview with Times of India, MP Singh MS Dhoni’s former coach, who was seen working with him at Delhi indicated a few threatening, signs for the Bangladeshi side. He said: “He was hitting them hard and clean, like he used to do in his younger days. Don’t be surprised if you see an attacking Dhoni in action in Bangladesh, I met him a few times in the last few years. Now he seems very relaxed and mentally strong.”
It is notable that Dhoni has retired from the longer format of the game after the 3rd test in the Australian tour down under. He has a very powerful back lift, and supersonic bat-speed have been the lethal weapon of this swashbuckling wicket-keeper batsmen over the years. But, he had made some modifications in it to suit the tempo of test cricket.
M.P Singh further asserted: “He had changed his stance and technique for Test cricket. Now that he doesn’t have to think about the format, he wants to get back to his previous technique.
“He had widened his stance and started to keep his bat between the feet. He has now decided to revert to his earlier stance in a bid to bring back the booming backlift. He demonstrated it to me and asked if it resembled his original stance.”
Many former players and cricket experts like Sourav Ganguly have been questioning the batting position of Dhoni in ODI’s. Dhoni has amassed 8,499 runs at an average of 52.46 in ODI cricket. The argument is that one of the best ODI batters of the world should not be underutilized at such a lower position.
On this point, M.P Singh said that, “We discussed if he could come up the order. He said he will deliberate if somehow batting at No.4 can work out for him. He looks fit enough to carry on for some more time now.
At no.4 position, the Indian captain holds a supreme record with an aggregate of 910 runs at an amazing average of 70 with 109* as his highest score.
India will take on Bangladesh in the 1st ODI at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur on 18th June.
